Ways to Reduce Water Costs in Your Home
Whether you’re doing it for the environment or to cut back on some bills, saving water is a great initiative. Especially with the current global water shortage crisis going on, it’s a good idea to reflect how you’re using water and to what extent you can cut back.
From watering the garden to washing the dishes, the average person uses around 80-100 gallons of water in a single day, as found by the U.S. Geological Survey. If you’re not smart about it, the amount can add up and cost you a lot.
The good news is that there are a number of ways to reduce your water usage and not have it affect you majorly.
Replace Water-Guzzling Appliances
A number of household appliances use surplus water that can be easily saved. The washing machine, for example, can end up using a lot of unnecessary water if left unchecked. Having more efficient appliances in place can help you save more water per load.
Upgrade Your Faucets
We’ve all heard about how turning off the faucet while brushing our teeth or washing our face can help us save water. But not all of us keep that in mind every time. Luckily, you can conserve water even while the tap is running. Having an aerator or a WaterSense Certified faucet installed can improve efficiency by 30%.
Use Your Dishwasher Efficiently
It may seem surprising but using a dishwasher can actually help you save more water than if you hand-washed the dishes. While the dishwasher uses around 6 gallons of water per cycle, the water that flows through the faucet is around 2 gallons per minute. You’ll be better off with the dishwasher. Also make sure it’s fully loaded before you run it as that is more water-efficient.
Investigate Any Leaks
Did you know that household leaks waste around 1 trillion of water every year? That’s a lot of wastage that could have been saved. While leaks may seem like a small problem, those are gallons of water you’re wasting every day. It all adds up and can cost you a lot in the long run.
Dispose Less, Compost More
Your garbage disposal can require a lot of running water to efficiently get rid of everything. Starting a compost pile is an energy-efficient, not to mention environment-friendly, way of saving water. Instead of dumping food scraps down the disposal, you can add them to the compost instead.
