Reasons Why You Could Be Experiencing Low Water Pressure

Experiencing low water pressure can be an incredibly frustrating thing. Your showers start to take longer than usual. The washing machine takes longer to fill up and washing the dishes turns into a time-consuming, tedious ordeal as the faucets are barely dribbling out any water. Low water pressure can put a damper on a number of everyday chores.

But fortunately, low water pressure can be easily fixed. The first step in getting proper water pressure is by identifying what’s causing the low pressure in the first place. To help you determine the cause, we’ve listed down a couple of reasons behind low water pressure.

Faulty Plumbing Fixtures

Most of the time, low water pressure is usually because of faulty fixtures. If you have outdated faucets or showerheads, they’re likely to be all clogged with dirt, rust, and limestone buildup. This can impede the flow of water as well as reduce its quality. Low water pressure could also be due to clogged aerator screens on the showerheads and faucets. Check the water flow for each faucet individually to determine whether low water pressure is because of faulty fixtures.

Issues with the Water Valve

Your home’s water flow is controlled by two major valves. One of them is typically on the water meter outside on the street while the other one is on your own property. Both are usually located on a wall near the water line. If either valve is not open sufficiently, that could be causing trouble with the water supply.

Clogged Water Pipes

If the water valves are functioning fine, the trouble could lie with clogged pipes. Pipes can clog up after some time, especially if they’re galvanized pipes. To determine whether you have clogged pipes blocking water pressure, you’ll need to call a plumber. Don’t attempt to unclog the pipes by yourself as that can end up contaminating the water.

Faulty Pressure Regulator

Some homes also have a pressure regulator valve installed that manages the water supply to the home in a comfortable and safe manner. Unnecessarily high-water pressure can affect appliances. A regulator will maintain and protect the fixtures and appliances. But if the regulator starts malfunctioning, it could lead to a decrease in water pressure.

Water Heater Problems

If you’re specifically noticing water pressure problems with the hot water, this could be a case of trouble with the water heater. Sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank and in the pipes can result in undesirable water pressure. Fortunately, it can be easily inspected and fixed by a plumber.
