How to Handle a Gas Leak
– Know the Signs
If you think your home might have a gas leak, turn off the gas meter or the pilot light. Your next step should be to inform the gas company. However, if you’re not entirely sure it’s a gas leak, check for other signs:
- Bubbles, a cloud, or dust forming in standing water
- A subtle whistling or hissing sound
- House plants that are suddenly dying
- Visible damage to a gas line component
Along with these, think back to any times you may have experienced the following health symptoms:
- Ringing in the ears
- Throat or eye irritation
- Nausea
- Reduced appetite
- Headaches
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Breathing difficulties
- Chest pain
- Depression and irritability
- Sudden mood swings
People with weaker immune systems such as older adults or children, as well as people with asthma, may develop these symptoms easily, which are signs of carbon monoxide poisoning. If that’s the case, notify your gas company immediately.
– Be Careful When Handling a Gas Leak
DO NOT TRY TO HANDLE A GAS LEAK YOURSELF. With something as volatile as natural gas, you want to as far away from it as possible and leave any gas leak repairs to the experts. Also, do NOT open your windows to disperse the gas.
Natural gas is flammable if it consumes 5–15% of the air space. By giving it more space, you make your home more unsafe. Also, do not switch on/off any appliances or lights in your home or building where the leak may be. Any sparks may ignite the gas.
