Disposing of ‘unflushables’ is an innocent but costly mistake that most of us make. Homeowners don’t think twice before dumping coffee grounds, vegetable peels, bacon grease, or food debris down the garbage disposal unit, for instance. The same happens in bathrooms.
But here’s the thing: all of these items will clog up your drains and reduce the lifespan of your pipes. This is because when pipes clog up, they can only be unclogged using special chemical-based solutions, plungers, vacuums, and tools—most of which may put a strain on the structure of the pipes.
To make your pipes last longer:
- Don’t treat them like a trash can
- Speak to the manufacturer about what you can dispose of.
Choose the Right Piping Material
No matter how efficient the plumbing system, it can still deteriorate if it’s made of weak materials. This is why you should choose piping material after lots of research.
Homes built hundreds of years ago used clay for piping material, which was quite susceptible to breaking down. But pipes that are made of copper can last for as many as 50 years.
If you want your plumbing system to last a lifetime, choose either cast iron or PVC piping. Cast iron has a lifespan of around 100 years, while PVC piping lasts indefinitely.
Get frequent plumbing inspections
Prevention is better than cure when it comes to you and your plumbing system’s health.
During a plumbing inspection, the plumber will thoroughly look for any signs of leaks, corrosion, water pressure issues, and system malfunctions.
They will check all the sinks, faucets, drains, and pipes. Professional plumbing specialists have the right tools and equipment to look into drains and connections that are out of sight.
