The Ultimate Residential Plumbing Inspection Checklist
Prevention is better than cure—both in terms of your health and home plumbing issues.
Avoiding stepping out in the cold and eating healthy saves you from a lot of healthcare expenses.
Similarly, getting your home’s plumbing system inspected and repaired on time can help you save on replacement costs that would otherwise be incurred later on.
Another benefit of getting timely plumbing inspections is that they keep your system running efficiently and bolster the lifespan of your appliances.
For your convenience, we’ve made a quick plumbing inspection checklist for you to follow:
The Bathroom
Most of a plumber’s business is in the bathroom. Here’s a list of fixtures that may need your attention:
1. The toilet
You can’t afford to have your toilet not working for a whole day. The toilet has a number of different components. Even if one wears out, the entire system can break down. To know whether your toilet is working perfectly, the plumber will flush it once.
If the toilet continues to run even after the flush cycle is over, it needs to be fixed. Your plumbing inspector will also check if the toilet rocks if someone sits on it or whether there’s water seeping out of the base.
2. Caulk seal
The caulk around the tub or shower is not exactly a plumbing fixture, but may lead to issues if not taken care of.
If the caulk breaks down, the water from the bathtub will travel beyond the walls and spread all over the bathroom floor.
Your plumber will check whether the caulk bed is intact and to see if there are any pores or cracks. They will also seal any cracks and close them up. For better results, use high-quality silicone to build a new caulk bed every few years.
The Kitchen
The two main plumbing fixtures in your kitchen are as below:
1. Sink drain
Doing the dishes becomes an annoying chore if the water doesn’t drain easily. If you have to wait for the drain to clear after you wash a new plate, the whole process can take hours. Sinks don’t drain when either the drain pipe or the sink strainer is clogged. In most cases, you can clear the drainer on your own. However, only a professional plumber will be able to disassemble the fitting and clear the buildup from within.
2. Shutoff valves
The shutoff valves are the most important fixtures in your kitchen, since they control the water supply to the faucet, dishwasher, and all the refrigerator lines. As a part of the routine inspection, your plumber will shut off these valves and check whether the water supply to all other fixtures immediately closes down. If it doesn’t, the shutoff valves need to be replaced.
